Once the best laid plans have been in place, how do we help to prepare loved ones for their future?
Sometimes we can get so caught up in the routine of life that we forget to prepare sufficiently for our future. While we don’t want to be guilty of missing the present, the future is looming and requires a well thought out strategy to then be implemented in order to be successful. The famous saying, “Failure to plan is planning to fail” rings true.
The month of September is National Preparedness month, and while everyone typically thinks of the hallmark preparedness for tragedies or storing up a nest egg, there is another level of preparedness that leaves a mark on all who come behind – preparing for the future generations we may never meet, but can impact for all eternity.
While a righteous man leaves an inheritance for his children and children’s children, He would be wiser still to also lay a foundation of preparing hearts so the original vision he had for them is realized beyond the grave.
Roots. Generations to come will have long forgotten preceding generations if they are not reminded of the foundation of their families. Younger generations feel a sense of connection when reflecting on stories of ancestors, but how much more when those same people took the time to think of them? Roots can have a powerful affect and influence when traditions and history are passed down intentionally. Passing down cherished traditions and preserving family stories helps to keep them alive.
Communication. Resources like Legacy Stories help us to connect with generations we may never lay eyes on. Pictures help to connect with future children, but the personal touch of a letter or journal sharing our thoughts imparts discipleship to go with the provision and offers guidance when we no longer can.
Family Motto. Defining family goals and coming up with a family crest or motto helps to remind everyone of their family identity and spiritual legacy. Invite members of the family to contribute to the vision. What do you want to be remembered for? Have fun and create a family crest that inspires everyone to be faithful to the family creed.
Relationships. Intentionality in building in a mentality of serving the generation who comes behind is a constant communicative process. Building in legacy moments on family vacations and throughout daily living and holidays helps to build a firm legacy that will not fade with time.
